Sitting, Waiting, Wishing

The Pokémon market is about to give the ultimate challenge to collectors and investors.

These days, Pokémon collectors and investors are busying themselves debating whether the current market plateau is the peak before the inevitable crash, or a pause before the return of the boom.

I’ve heard all the reasons…

The bulls are convinced the 30th anniversary next year will be a huge catalyst for the continuation of the boom.

Meanwhile the bears think market is played out, collectors are exhausted, and months of dipping prices have driven the hypebeasts from the market, making the correction inevitable.

The market is scared.

And everyone is sharing doom and gloom or market boom copium because it gets clicks.

But it’s just rampant speculation cosplaying as analysis.

Collecting isn’t trading. Trying to time the exact top or bottom of the market is a fool’s game. The most successful collectors didn’t need to time the market. They simply mastered one simple thing:

They bought assets they understood, at prices that made sense to them, and then they held through the noise.

That’s it.

This exact moment in the market, when fear and boredom are at their peak, is the ultimate test for collectors and investors.

This is the exact part of the cycle before the crowd sells everything at the low and swears off Pokémon forever. Right as the new opportunity emerges for the long-term holders.

Will you fall prey to short-term narratives? Or are you here to win over the long-term?

Pokémon has evolved from a childhood collectibles to a multi-generational pop-culture phenomenon. Along the way, it’s become the top grossing media franchise of all time.

Regardless of what the market does next: Pokémon isn’t going anywhere.

The longevity of Pokémon, and its ability to thrive after years in the market and in the face of non-stop competition, is constantly undervalued by the average collector. It’s why they constantly look for “the next Pokémon”, thinking they’ll finally “get in early”.

These collectors don’t realize how unlikely that is. They overvalue new TCGs, and grossly undervalue the established long-term king.

All it takes is holding Pokémon over the long term.

You’ve already picked the winner.

Just enjoy the ride!

Turn off the noise, be patient, and let’s see what happens from here.

Whatever the market does, we’ll just mark its position on the Collectibles Cycle and take the appropriate action from there.

After all: time in the market beats timing the market.

As usual, thank you so much for reading the TCG Buyers Club newsletter. My name’s Grey, I buy cardboard, and I’m on a mission to make collecting and investing in Pokémon simple.

Cheers 🍻

P.S. What kind of market noise are you seeing right now, and does it have you concerned? Are you waiting to see what the market does from here, or are you taking action today? Reply and let me know!
